Class Evaluation

I really enjoy when we get to share out our opinions on things regarding the digital age and spreading of information. I also love being able to collaborate with other students so when can build off of one another to create deeper understandings of the concepts we learn. Mr. Haymore uploads all of our assignment tasks on Schoology. This makes it easy for me to know what I have to do and when it is due.

Some things that I did not like about class was that all of our assignments were worth 100 points. This made it so that it was very difficult to raise your grade but very easy for it to drop dramatically. I was constantly worried that my grade would drop to below an A when I was giving an A effort. I also did not like that we focused more on the explore and create performance tasks because they were worth less than the multiple choice portion. It was also difficult to receive guidance when it came to programming languages. We had to figure it out on our own, which for some people took more time than others. This caused there to be a lot of pressure on the students to complete their tasks, even if they practiced and studied 30 minutes a day.

Some recommendations for next year would be to spend more time on Code.org. I really enjoy hands on learning in this subject. Although that is typically not the case, this website has given me the freedom to explore concepts like I have never had the opportunity to do before. Another recommendation is to have practice AP Computer Science Principle exams in order to understand the process and experience. If I had an evaluation of my strengths and weaknesses on the test, I would have done much better because I could have focused on improving in those areas.

The highlight of this class was being able to see my friends creations and playing with them. Enrique created this game where I had to click on a cartoon figure but it was really difficult. Although it took me a while to beat the game, it was a lot of fun. I was very impressed with his work.

I think I did my best in class but there will always be much more room for improvement. I always tried to study before tests and complete my assignments on time. I learned that just because I am not good at something, it does not mean I should not give 100% It was difficult because I did not master the super complex concepts but I know the basics and that’s more than I could say previously.

I am reading my life planning goals every day. I am working to get 300 written down. I want to get a leather binded journal. Because my goals are important to me, I would like to carry them in style. It is also difficult to read my life planning goals for five minutes exactly because I am a fast reader, so what I do is try to visualize myself working toward them and accomplishing them.

I am striving to be an Arete and CTR person. The process is not easy but it is very much worth it. I make sure to study and do homework as well as help people and spread this philosophy. I am ready to continue it because I want to reach other people and make sure they work toward their potential. The more Arete people exist, the better the world can become. I want to be among the group of people that changes the world for the better. I can do that if I Choose the Right and am a Arete person.

Senior Camping Trip

The Senior camping trip was a wonderful experience. It gave me an opportunity to reflect on where I was. After an incredibly stressful and emotionally-straining week, I tried my hardest to remain hopeful and excited for the weekend. I decided to have that attitude throughout and although it was not easy, venting with my friends about the difficulties I had kept quiet about, had proved helpful. Before that though, the night was difficult. Negative thoughts flooded my mind and with that came a huge migraine. I decided to challenge myself and wake up at 4:30 a.m. the next morning to go hiking. Thus began a series of mental and physical challenges I decided to endure. I dabbled in archery, went through three rounds of paintball shooting (including a civil war style shoot-out) and attempted to rock climb. The first time I was not able to get all the way to the top. It was discouraging mainly because getting to the top of the rock wall was the only way to zip line. That was the primary reason I was excited to go to the trip. I began to think of the wall metaphorically as my life. I felt like at the end of my long and difficult week, that God was trying to tell me something and the key was in that wall. It was frustrating not knowing what it was, but I trusted in Him and was patient. With the encouragement of Mr. C I tried to climb it again. This time I had friends, peers, the HPIAM staff, and even strangers guiding me and cheering me on. My legs were shaky like gelatin but I continued. My hands blistered and my arms felt week but I pushed myself up at every step. When I got to the top my eyes watered and my mouth was absolutely dry. But I had done it. As I went through the zip line and felt I was flying, it was like a weight was lifted off of me. The experience had humbled me and served as a gentle reminder that with the support of great people, anything is possible. We had a beautiful campfire later on that night where I heard about people’s hopes and dreams and it was very inspiring. Later on that night a couple of friends and I stood up until one in the morning talking about the beauty of God, how he moves through us differently and how he is always present. Overall the experience was very enriching and the amazing free buffet didn’t hurt. I feel so lucky to have been able to be part of this. It was truly a blessing.

Class Evaluation

This class has been a very enjoyable experience for me. There are many things that I like about this class, but I really enjoy when we get to share out our opinions on things regarding the digital age and spreading of information. I also love being able to collaborate with other students so when can build off of one another to create deeper understandings of the concepts we learn. Mr. Haymore uploads all of our assignment tasks on Schoology. This makes it easy for me to know what I have to do and when it is due. All of this and more made our class be as great as it is!

Some things that I did not like about class was that all of our assignments were worth 100 points. This made it so that it was very difficult to raise your grade but very easy for it to drop dramatically. At the same time, I think it helped me to stay on my toes and take every assignment seriously. It was a challenge that helped me become a better student, have better learning habits, and be more responsible.

This past lesson was my favorite!I loved that we were able to use class information create a visual representations a data story. It made me feel very engaged. I loved how we had to write lengthy and in depth-responses because it increased our level of critical thinking and made us more able to communicate and explain the process well.

I think I did my best in class but there will always be much more room for improvement. I always tried to study before tests and complete my assignments on time.

To qualify for college credit I am revisiting the College Board website and reviewing our tasks for the Advanced Placement exam.

I am reading my life planning goals every day but have not been updating my page in my electronic portfolio. I will improve and update it more frequently.

I am striving to be an Arete and CTR person. The process is not easy but it is very much worth it. I make sure to study and do homework as well as help people and spread this philosophy.

Technology Innovation

Lucid dreaming could become a common occurence if consumer purchase the iBand. The iBand is a headband that tracks your brain waves and patterns during sleep. It stimulates the brain with light and sound during REM, causing the person sleeping to realize they are dreaming. It can also be used for improving focus, meditation, and stress therapy. This will help treat sleeping disorders and will impact a large population that suffer them. I think that this is a very unique innovation. People don’t really think of lucid dreaming as a necessity but it does help stimulate creativity and problem solving, which I think the world needs more of. On the other hand, I do think it is more of a luxury that a necessity. Although indeed a cool object, I personally would not purchase it. There are apps on phones to track sleeping as well as music to relax before heading to bed. Lucid dreaming can also be practiced through other methods. It seems pricey and alternative cheaper methods exist.

Explore Performance Task

I really enjoyed my explore performance task. It was an opportunity to apply my knowledge on how the internet impacts modern society and our role as users. On the first day, the researching portion seemed tedious, but it was very helpful in gathering different points of views. My topic on internet censorship has impacted populations at very deep levels and has opinions all across the spectrum of either support or condemnation. I was able to submerge myself in different perspectives and realize that this controversial topic is one of the defining factors of advancement in the technological age.

Writing my flash talk was an exciting experience. I was eager to write about my own thoughts after carefully weighing the pros and cons. Expressing my opinions became easy when I imagined myself being censored on the internet and what that meant to younger generations. Presenting my flash talk was an even cooler experience. It was an opportunity to inform others and communicate knowledge that some people did not otherwise know.

Internet Innovations

Scientists are now looking to compare genomes on a larger scale by using internet databases. At the moment, there are many concerns and limitations with putting such personal information on the internet. The Global Alliance for Genomics and Health has high profile memberships which have helped develop an improved way to move DNA around the web. They have created a network that addresses privacy concerns and may lead to commercial success. If it is successful, doctors will have information of patients with similarn illnesses, have a bettter idea of what direction to take with their own patient, and be able to give the patient more detailed information. This impacts people who have illnesses in which genomes have a need to be identified. I this this is a great innovation because it is for a good cause. I support it as long as it respects everyones privacy choices.

Technology Innovation

The Waterseer is a device like no other that has revolutionized accessibility to water. Its unique design has allowed for constant collection of condensation with a use of air directed beneath the soil into a chamber. This can impact people looking to decrease their reliance on water provided by the state, and also it can help those in developing countries that do not have regular access to water. This will solve the problems of people dying due to dehydration or poisoning due to poor quality of water. I think this is a phenomenal invention because it adresses issues that other similar inventions had and makes up for what they were lacking. The purchase of this device also helps families in developing countries recieve this device free of cost. I am so happy to hear about this innovation made specifically to help people! The creators of this device are Arete people.

Ben Carson

Ben Carson achieved his excellence through practice in neurosurgery and his numerous contributions to science and medicine. His excellence was achieved by seeking the Lord in all things and finding guidance through the bible. Despite his poor upbringing and violent temperament, he continued a path toward education by attending Yale and later University of Michigan Medical School. He was passionate about having knowledge expand his mind and became a great example of self-improvement. Technology contributed to his Arete experience by providing the tools necessary to perform his surgeries. I have a lot of respect for Dr. Carson’s dedication to his faith and changing the quality of neurosurgery for the better. I learned that faith can guide you toward choosing the right in life, and lead you toward the direction of helping others. He has made me realize that I have to ignore the nay-sayers and continue my journey by seeing the big picture. I am excited to attend college and learn both academically and socially. I want to inspire people like Dr. Ben Carson has.

Technology Innovations

The Smartbe Intelligent Stroller is an intelligent stroller withn a variety of features that increases comfort and safety for both the child and guardian while having the ability to be controlled with a smart phone. This will impact caregivers like parents and babysitters alike. It will solve the problems of having to have your hands on the stroller at all times and having difficulty going places due to the need to watch the baby stroller. I think this is a great innovation because it is hands off technology and seems to be very safe.
